we're all addicts

Best thing about the northeast power outage today? The
number of people I know which are/were online during
said outage due to having battery/generator backup, or
just laptops and phone lines. Skirt was even back by 8.

What kept gently prodding me while discussing the blackouts with some online friends was that I was getting the news at exactly the same time as they were - Fox News feeds into Sky News over here, and I also have CNBC Europe which was picking up various live feeds. I don't care how small a matter of telecomms this is, it's still something that catches my attention during a large-scale crisis.

The version that appears in the 2 many dj's sets
is the one I was listening to...

What I found sad is that I found out about said
power outage when servers went dead and my IM
clients went down to three people or so left.

Our house has a generator which requires a manual switchover, but someone usually gets to that in the half hour or so before the UPS would die. If my cable modem connection goes out, my PC automatically dials anyway. Why all this trouble? So that I can stay on AIM and IRC. Geez, I really am an addict.

Down here the most common reason for having a generator is ensuring that you won't even have a power outage. My grandmother lives further south of here where the hurricanes hit harder, has a generator, and her power -never- goes out. At my house though, the ap/router and the dsl line are on UPS to keep the brownouts from getting too annoying.

(It has stormed entirely too much this summer. It's storming right now, even, one brownout so far.)

Oh. I should also mention my friends who, the next day, in the absence of air conditioning, rigged up an ice chest full of dry ice and a fan so that their department could still get mail.
