ours is not to reason why

continue; as opposed to break; as the end bits on a case
statement in C, I can see no reason why, but usually there
isn't one.

oh so true...

Software may power the post-industrial world, but the creation
of software remains a pre-industrial trade. According to SEI's
studies, nearly 70% of software organizations are stuck in the
first two levels of SEI's scale of sophistication: chaos, and slightly
better than chaos.

And tonight, more friendly vodka!

Catching up with the beginning of the new season of Real Time
with Bill Maher (thank you HBO-OnDemand), one thing really
struck me: Robin Williams actually being a comic for once.
It's so refreshing to see him being funny as opposed to being
family friendly heartfelt sincere whatever the hell he does in
movies these days.

the old car collection

It lives on two spindles, and now I finally have all that I
want from it on live disk. Shiny new hard drive got set up
yesterday, you see. I still have to rip about five or six cds
which I forgot to do along the way, but it's mostly there.
Thank something for the index done while out of work in '03.

The music entries are going to be heavy on the music snob
side for a while, as I'm digging through old stuff.

birthday drinking!

Okay. So I turn 24 on Sunday the 27th.

In honor of this, on Saturday the 26th myself and various
other folks will be inhabiting lower Decatur and Frenchmen
bars from early evening (8-9ish) until late. Please stop by,
drop me a mail/comment for my cell number if you don't
have it and call whenever you find a parking space to see
which bar we're at. Probably going to start out somewhere
like Cafe Roma/Turtle Bay which has food and usually is
fairly empty early.

little fragments+rantlet

I now have a clean washed susie, after much wrestling
to get her into the shower. I don't have a bathtub at
this house which makes washing her a bit harder.

Friday was the 11th, which two years ago with the help
of Sercu, Kurt, and Mike Felice, I bought the civic and we
took Sarah out for her 21st birthday. Having to learn how
to drive stick in Rochester winter sucked but it ended up
worth it, as much as she annoys me the car is fun to drive.

I don't know how I am apparently the kind of girl that
doesn't like getting flowers, but people get that impression.
So let me set this straight: I like getting flowers. I'm not
too un-girly, I wear skirts, I wear heels again now that I'm
out of rochester and don't have to wear boots all winter.
(Even my laptop wears heels sometimes.)

So happy evil red day, love you all. ;)

Taking skirt down this evening so that I can swap out / with a less
flaky drive. Currently / makes bad noises and only mounts after
an fsck to mark bad spots.

Update: Not quite. "newer" drives don't seem to like her but
now that the old one is back in it no longer makes bad noises.
At least I don't have to wait on solaris to install on an old 2x.

memgrep rocks

I never thought I'd say that I missed going through hex dumps,
but I'm finding this strangely comforting. Maybe it's the fever.

I stayed at home sick today, and I'm now doing some vaguely
work-related stuff, toying with this cool little program called
memgrep using it to grab sections of running program to see
what's in them.

I miss internals. I don't play with cool code at all anymore.

(also. Do not set the ends of your hair on fire and then put
said fire out with your hands. Ouchy.)

been awhile since I've touched this file

So since I've been buying used cds via half.com and
ripping some of the collection lying around at the lab,
I decided to get around to updating the master list.

Current tally is about 650 albums, 260 or so of which
are offlined due to lack of hard drive space. Only
about 100 or so of the list I don't want. This leads me
to searching for a new hard drive to buy to actually
contain the music collection.

beads and evangelists

So I was very happy to wake up this morning without a
hangover. Stayed out very late monday, recovered tuesday
morning while watching the parades on tv, went back out
to acquire beads from drunk people on balconies and take
pictures of crazy evangelist people. The guys with PVC
crosses appeared to multiply as the day went on.

Digital camera hidden in bra = best idea ever. Pictures!

7 parades down...

"At this point the only things reliably on the agenda are
booze and coffee." - when making plans for the next
two days.

Haven't decided how early I"m going to make it out for
Mardi Gras Day, I have an invite to stuff that is starting
at about 9am. Heading out to Bacchus tonight, maybe
the superbowl will keep the crowds down a little.

so much water

I would like to wash my sofa-cover and a couple of other things.
Problem: getting to my laundry room requires shrimp boots.
This is what four inches of rain does to already soggy, low ground.

At least it's not snow.

crash? please? pretty-please?

I need some variant of debugger that doesn't slow me
down so I can catch timing bugs. Or I could just write
one in my "Copious Spare Time"TM.

I find myself begging the program to just crash. SEGV?
I can find that. Kill it, take it home, cook it for dinner.

Timing on the other hand, when it gets help from latency
and packet loss, is the bitch.
