electric roses and evacuations

orange rose

The rose is from January or so, up in Eden Isles in Slidell.
It was with a cluster of yellow ones growing up out of some
debris, and it just jumped out at me.

Nash Roberts actually evacuated for Katrina. Wow.

side note: totally loving the new Basement Jaxx. Thank you
hype machine, for informing me of its existence.

power raisins!

poWer Raisins

I forgot about these, and found them again in a bag of assorted
MRE remnants recently. So great.

the lotus and the debris pile

So yes, I have a bit of a thing for shiny and fast. A couple
of weeks ago I was in traffic heading Uptown on a Friday, and
noticed this stunning Lotus Elise parked on the street. On the
street, half a block down from a rusted out old car that had sat
around since before the storm, probably, sporting slashed tires.

Gorgeous charcoal grey ("Storm Titanium," I think), with black
convertible top, black interior and charcoal colored rims, and
I see this car nearly every day. Its presence is odd. The debris
pile at the house it belongs to only recently got picked up.

I wonder who it belongs to, and why he came home. It's like the
Maserati I ran across in the french quarter one night back in the
land of Before. Out of place, but I'm happy it's there.

a scattering

Nasty thunderstorm ate my cablemodem today. Lightning
struck a transformer nearby and screwed my neighbors
downstairs up as well. City wireless where are you?

Apparently there's a SCO training conference in Las Vegas
that is paying people $1000 to attend for three days.
How sad is that?

My vpn using poptop totally fucking rules. Yes Jordan, I
will get around to posting configs. It's actually easy once
you get mppe working. (I will just say that recompiling linux
on old pentium-3 firewall hardware sucks.)

I realized last week my intel mac mini lacked a name. It gets
sequin. Small, shiny, and annoying.

bond girl pool moment

pool-old picture

Always bring a bathing suit when you travel, lest you end
up in a hottub in New Jersey at 2am without one.

This evening I made some time to go actually use my student
priveleges and go swimming, which reminds me of the last
time I found myself in a pool, I had neglected the rule
above.

It is Thursday or so, week of Katrina, my grandparents
had come back, and their house had no power and an electric
water heater, but it does have a pool. I, of course, in
the scattering of things I forgot to evacuate with, had
no bathing suit. Never fear, for the pool closet of 60s
insanity is at my grandparents' house. The closest thing
to fitting was this 1960s white with flowers bikini that
is a bit too big, but manages to stay on. I feel like
one of the throwaway bond girls at the beginning of the
Connery era movies. It was a wonderfully cold pool.

bandwidth all for me

t1 input

It is finally here, and working, and I have no customers on
it for like a week. Sweet!

As usual, BellSouth sucks. My original circuit completion
date was June 9. They got the wire to the building July 5th.

I was also over at my ISP the other day, putting servers in
due to the late T1 line, and they told me that BellSouth will
no longer sell non-pppoe dsl lines, and pretty much forced
them to switch over their entire dsl customer base. "You
can offer your customers higher speeds, but only if you
take away their nice, static, bridged dsl lines." Business
as usual in their world, I suppose.

fun with tarps

A photographer contacted me a few weeks ago asking if he
could use one of my Mardi Gras pictures in an article about
blue tarp for the Seattle Times. Here's the article, it's
one of those light entertaining pieces, and they don't get
the FEMA stuff wrong, for a change. Pictures are in the
little slideshow thing.
