I'm finally getting around to building a LinkedIn profile.
Questions for y'all: How should I represent my non-day-job self?
"Position" entries for each of the primary consulting gigs?
Separate the programming from the sysadmin or not? Or should I
define my work as just working for me and put it all together?
It's not really clear, and I'm not sure where to go with it.

I'm not sure how you'd adequately represent consultant gigs. Hmm.. Certainly you should label yourself as an independent consultant with specialties a, b, and c, etc.
LinkedIn is awesome. I think of it as the facebook of the professional world.
You might consider putting each gig as a "position" but list yourself as "Independent Consultant" or "pink xterm" or whatever you decide, as employed from your start date (whenever?) to "current" or whatever the option is.
That way it clearly shows you're an active consultant, and is useful in tracking past and present clients.

Yeah, jury's still out re: incorporation. I like the name but I'm not sure about it still. That and doing a single-person LLC doesn't have the legal benefits.
It would be useful to have sections of "work as employee" and "work as contractor."
And I need to get the family company's website redone because it looks terrible. And the copy is out of date, we do more than it says we do. Sigh.
(Also, shout-out to Dossy whose comment got eaten, thanks!)

I'd use the "position" entries, think of a nice title that summarizes what you did, and then tack on "consultant" to the end of it.
What are you trying to incorporate? Might check out Sub Chapter S too.

Summarizing is difficult when you do many different things for companies. What I seem to have settled on is just saying "consultant" and listing the stuff in the details.
I fell into consulting - it's my only source of income and I bill out something around to a full workweek most of the time (minus a bit of overhead). However, I work as myself, not as "consulting company/llc/etc" which is something I should fix.
It's more a matter of finding the time to do the proper research and stuff. The working title is pink xterm (as jordan said) but it's not final.
